Ministerial Program for the Rhine.
Water power – that of the Rhine in this case – is an undisputedly efficient and environmentally friendly means of generating electricity. However, it is not without impact on the river’s ecosystem.   The riparian states acknowledge this and have adopted the Rhine 2000 Action Program.
This lays down the following objectives: sustainable development of the Rhine; continuing improvement of environmental conditions; holistic flood prevention measures; conservation, enhancement and restoration of near-natural habitats and river action.
The Birsfelden hydropower plant has taken some initial measures in this respect too. During the modernization work, all the parts of the plant that come into in contact with water were made lubricant free, ensuring that no more oil or grease escape into the Rhine. The plant’s management is currently discussing further means of implementing Rhine 2000 measures with environmental groups.
