| At the Conference on Global
Climate Change in Kyoto, the parties to the Global Climate Change
treaty agreed to reduce worldwide emissions of greenhouse gases. Hydropower
plants supply the major part of Swiss electricity, thus helping to
prevent the production of any additional CO2. |

The measures making up the
2000 Energy Action
Program are based on the assumption that power consumption will
rise only slightly. Part of this rise will be covered by hydropower
not by constructing new plants, but by raising the efficiency
of existing plants.
The 70 million Swiss franc modernization of the Birsfelden plant was
a part of these efforts and an impressive testimony to their feasibility. |
