Hans Hofmann had already worked
on plans for Birsfelden hydropower plant. From 1942 to 1947, he was
an inspector and representative of the Swiss Union for Preservation
of the National Heritage
Together with the Union commission
and the engineer A. Aegerter, Hofmann laid down the crucial principle
behind the construction of the plant. In the name of active preservation
of the national heritage, the idea was not simply to construct a hydropower
plant, but to recreate a new but equally beautiful landscape in the
place of the charming Rhineland countryside. The resulting project
was approved by all the interested parties and at last became a reality.
