The Weir.

The weir is 157 meters wide – about as wide as the bed of the Rhine was formerly. The five sluices have 11 meter-high hook-type wickets weighing 227 tonnes each (details). These are used to regulate water flow and ensure a sufficient water level for navigation. Each sluice has two winding gear units that raise and lower the wickets. In case of plant failure, a fast-closing facility guarantees a smooth flow of water to prevent any flooding hazard.
