The double-regulated Kaplan turbine is the
mechanical heart of the power plant. The adjustable guide vanes
(2) on the turbine casing (3) ensure that the water flowing in from
the Rhine falls evenly on the four also adjustable
blades on the turbine runner (4), causing it to turn. The turbine
runner is permanently coupled to the generator
by means of a shaft. The mechanical energy produced by these rotating
parts is transformed into electrical energy in the generator. The
power is fed to the distribution station via transformers and from
there to the three regional utilities or to the electricity
customers.
The heat from the generating process is supplied free to a nearby
residential district via an environmentally friendly district
heating plant.
